Gouverneur... The One and Only
Gouverneur is the Gateway to St. Lawrence County. And it is the only town of that name in the entire United States, but that's not the only thing that makes Gouverneur very special. This historic community was founded in 1805 and is nestled between the foothills of the majestic Adirondack Mountains and the bustling Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence River.

Twenty miles to the south is Fort Drum, home of the renowned 10th Mountain Infantry Division. A day trip of an hour and a half will bring you to Lake Placid, home of the 1980 Winter Olympics. Just an hour and half north is Ottawa, the cultural and political capital of Canada. The nearby Adirondack Mountains offer high peaks and forested meadows, crisp mountain lakes, hiking trails, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling trails.

Qualified homeowners can apply, through their local assessor, for tax exemptions on their primary residence.
All applications must be submitted to the assessor’s office by 3/1/2026.
Housing Rehabilitation Assistance
The Town of Gouverneur's Housing Rehabilitation Program has received funding through HUD Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars, administered through the NYS Office of Community Renewal to provide assistance to homeowners for rehabilitation activities necessary to help alleviate substandard conditions in their homes.
Only properties that are determined to be substandard are eligible to be assisted under this program. This handbook will explain the Town’s rehabilitation program and how it works. It is meant to be a guide to the program, not a definitive presentation of the program’s policies.
We have been awarded a 4th grant in the amount of $400,000.
